Recycling Program To Begin In November

During the September 3rd town council meeting, the council voted in favor of a town wide curbside recycling program.  The decision was not easy and was the culmination of months of research and a survey with more than 50% of the town’s residents responding.

First a recap of the events leading up to the September decision.  In early June, residents who are on the town email list were asked some questions regarding participation in a recycling program.  In ensuing weeks and months, a large portion of the email recipients had responded with the majority overwhelmingly in favor of such a program.

The idea was formally presented to the town council in July and was mentioned in the August issue of the Gazette.  On August 6, 2009 a public hearing was held to allow input from the public.  Everyone who spoke at the hearing spoke in favor of the proposed recycling program.  Additionally, about 90% of those surveyed at the time were in favor of the program.  However, some of the council members requested more town input before coming to a decision.  The idea was tabled until more citizens could be surveyed.

At that point a group of  residents offered to survey their neighbors in an attempt to get a larger sampling for the survey and they presented their findings during the September 3, 2009 meeting.  The survey results showed that 50.4% of the residents had responded to the survey.  Of those respondents, 85.8% were in favor of a recycling program while 90.3% were either in favor of or indifferent to the proposal.  After a lengthy discussion, the issue was voted upon and our program will begin in November.

Implementing The Recycling Program

  •           Econowaste will begin delivering new blue recycling cans in mid October.  The cans will be similar in size to our current trash cans.
  •           The first pick up date will be November 2, 2009, then every other Monday after that.
  •           Regular trash pickup will continue every week with recycling picked up ever other week.
  •           Effective with the November billing cycle, an additional $4 will be added to your bill for trash services (our new rate including recycling will still be less than those outside of town pay for trash pickup from other companies)
  •           The fee for a second Trash can will likely be increased, so be sure to contact the town hall at 745-3420 to make arrangements to return your second can in early November if you wish to no longer be charged for  two or more garbage cans.  If you wish, you may return your extra can(s) to the east side of the town hall, then call to inform the town that your can has been returned.
  •           After six months, the town’s trash dumping expenses will be reevaluated.  If we are receiving considerable savings, then the recycling rates will be revisited with the savings being passed on to the residents, i.e. the rates will be decreased.
  •           Timely updates will be available at www.HuntsvilleTown.com , via the Huntsville Town email list and via the Gazette.

We recommend you hang a copy of the Recycling List on your fridge and next to your trash cans until you become familiar with recycling.  A limited number of Laminated lists will be available at the town hall.
